BALTIMORE -- High’s is giving its part-time workforce another reason to stick around. Starting next week, the Mid-Atlantic convenience-store chain will offer health insurance benefits to its nearly 250 part-time employees.
The retailer is stepping up to ensure workers have access to affordable coverage. “High’s of Baltimore strives to offer its employees the best benefits in the industry,” said Katie Alford, human resources manager. “We value our employees and want them to grow with us.”
The healthcare plan will include free unlimited Teladoc visits, free preventive-care services, free primary-care physician visits and discounted prescriptions. Staff can also choose to cover spouses and children.
Baltimore-based High’s is not the only retailer to boost benefits to promote staff retention.
In 2013, Cumberland Farms, Westborough, Mass., expanded its healthcare coverage to part-time team members when many companies were pulling back hours in response to the Affordable Care Act.
At c-store retailer Maverik Inc., Salt Lake City, full-time employees’ insurance coverage includes office visits, hospitalizations, emergency care, prescriptions, maternity and mental-health resources. Employees can arrange phone consultations with doctors and access to medical clinics around Salt Lake City. Staff can also take advantage of free annual screenings, nutritionist consultations and gym reimbursement programs.
High’s, ranked No. 139 in CSP's 2018 Top 202 list of c-store chains by number of company-owned retail outlets, has 46 c-stores with 500 employees.
