Kroger Co. to Retrofit Lighting in C-Stores

Partners with LSI Industries on multiyear project

CINCINNATI -- Kroger Co. has tapped LSI Industries Inc. to retrofit 1,000 of its gas stations/convenience stores with more energy-efficient LED lighting. The deal is part of a multiyear lighting retrofit project supporting Kroger Co.’s sustainability efforts to reduce cost and carbon.

The LSI LED fixtures will replace traditional HID technology in approximately 1,000 fuel centers across the United States, thus achieving energy savings, longer life, maintenance reduction, higher color rendering index and better overall light quality.

"We are thrilled to be working together with Kroger, based right here in Cincinnati, on this retrofit project,” said Shawn Toney, president of LSI Lighting Solutions, also based in Cincinnati.

As the nation's largest supermarket chain and one of the world's largest retailers, any reduction in electricity use at Kroger stores has the potential to have noteworthy environmental impacts, according to an Indianapolis Star report.

Last week, Kroger noted it has cut its energy consumption by more than one-third since 2000, saving 2.3 billion KWh, or enough electricity to power every single-family home in Charlotte, N.C. The company also noted that was the carbon equivalent of removing 334,000 cars from the road for one year.

"Kroger's sustainability efforts begin with a commitment to transparency and performance," said Suzanne Lindsay-Walker, Kroger's director of sustainability, according to the newspaper. "Our improving Carbon Disclosure Project score and inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the third consecutive year are important mile markers, but our work is only just beginning. We will continue to set and meet sustainability commitments for our customers, associates, communities and our planet."

Kroger's Convenience Division includes the following retail brands: Kwik Shop, Loaf N' Jug, Quik Stop Markets, Tom Thumb Food Stores and Turkey Hill Minit Markets.
