Chain adds new, bigger stores focused on fresh food, expanded product options, in six states

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Kum & Go LC is on a roll. Since the beginning of November, the company has opened more than a dozen convenience stores in six states. By the end of the year, it will have opened 40 new stores during 2012, it said on Facebook.

On Dec. 14, the company announced the opening of a new Kum & Go store in Fountain, Colo. This newly constructed store expands the chain's presence to seven stores in the Colorado Springs metropolitan area and 44 locations throughout the state.

The same day, it opened a new store in Monument, Colo.

Kum & Go opened four stores on Dec. 7. Its newly constructed store in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, expands Kum & Go's presence to five stores in the Cedar Rapids-Marion area, and to 154 stores throughout Iowa.

It opened a new store in Springfield, Mo. It razed the store previously at this location in August 2012 to make room for the all-new Kum & Go store design. After four months of construction, the store is one of 48 Kum & Go locations in the Springfield metropolitan area and 73 locations throughout Missouri.

The company opened a new Kum & Go store in Springdale, Ark. The store previously at this location was razed in September 2012 to make room for the all-new Kum & Go store design. After three months of construction, the store is one of five Kum & Go locations in Springdale and 37 throughout Arkansas.

And it opened a newly constructed Kum & Go store in North Little Rock, Ark.

It also opened a new Kum & Go store in Gillette, Wyo. The store previously at this location was razed in July 2012 to make room for the all-new Kum & Go store design. After four months of construction, the store is one of three Kum & Go locations in Gillette and 16 in Wyoming.

The stores, all at approximately 5,000-square feet, introduce many new features both inside and outside the buildings. Inside, customers will find a larger product selection, a center checkout area with customer-focused staff, and an expanded Go Fresh Market offering fresh, made-to-order pizzas, as well as breakfast and deli sandwiches and baked goods--all made fresh daily at Kum & Go's onsite kitchen. Outside, a larger number of fueling positions, as well more variety in fuel offerings, give customers more choices and value at the pump.

"We're excited to bring our newest store design" to these new locations, said president and CEO Kyle J. Krause. "This store layout has been designed with our customers in mind. From fresh food options to a wide selection in products, all aspects of our stores have been configured to focus on delivering fast, friendly customer service."

Another distinguishing feature of Kum & Go's new store design is the strong emphasis on sustainability. Kum & Go designs and constructs the stores with LEED certification in mind. Each store is submitted under these rigorous guidelines to become LEED certified. Sustainable features of these new stores include Solatube skylights, LED lighting both inside and outside, low-flow water efficient fixtures and high-energy-efficiency equipment. Each store is built using recyclable materials and locally sourced materials.

West Des Moines, Iowa-based Kum & Go's more than 450 c-stores are located in Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming. Along with name-brand merchandise, it sells a proprietary mix of products under the Hiland brand name.
