ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- U.S. convenience stores reached record in-store sales of $213.5 billion in 2014, higher than overall industry sales in 1998. Overall industry sales for 2014 reached $696.1 billion, according to the NACS State of the Industry Report of 2014 Data, a collection of data and trends and benchmarking tool for the convenience and fuel retailing industry, released by the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS).

Published since 1972, the NACS State of the Industry Report provides information to help industry stakeholders maximize their company’s growth and profitability. The 188-page report examines economic conditions and their potential impact on the industry. The report includes charts and tables that focus on every area of the industry’s 2014 performance, including financial performance, store operations, merchandising, foodservice, fuels sales and quartile analysis.

“We appreciate the time and effort invested by NACS retail survey participants for this year’s survey. Their investment in sharing data pays off many times over for industry efforts both at the grassroots and national levels for combating excess governmental regulation with the best possible information, and in addition provides the strongest benchmark data available for retailers to maximize their profitability,” said NACS director of research and statistics Bob Swanson.

Purchasers of the NACS State of the Industry Report of 2014 Data will also receive the Fact Book as a downloadable, self-extracting file. Now in its 28th edition, the Fact Book provides a detailed statistical account of industry data over the past several years—or in some cases, decades—as well as a historical recap of the industry and key definitions and events that have shaped it. The Fact Book will be available in late July.

Founded in 1961, NACS is the international association for convenience and fuel retailing. The U.S. convenience store industry, with more than 152,700 convenience stores across the country, posted $696.1 billion in total sales in 2014, of which $482.6 billion were motor fuels sales. NACS has 2,100 retail and 1,600 supplier member companies, which do business in nearly 50 countries.
