Parker’s Wins Historic Preservation Award

Recognized for renovation of Philbrick-Eastman mansion in Savannah, Ga.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Convenience-store retailer Parker’s recently won a Historic Savannah Foundation Historic Preservation Award for the company’s renovation of the Philbrick-Eastman House. The Historic Savannah Foundation recognized the winners at its annual Preservation Awards Luncheon on May 7.

Built by Irish-born architect Charles B. Cluskey on one of Savannah’s original trust lots, the elegant Philbrick-Eastman House features extensive use of columns, decorative iron fencing with medallions of famous Americans, elaborate crown moldings, 14-foot ceilings, woodwork and original oak floors.

This Greek revival mansion, originally built between 1844 and 1847, is one of Savannah’s iconic historic structures, overlooking Chippewa Square.

Greenline Architecture Inc. served as the lead architect, and Ralph Kuhn of Kuhn Construction Co. served as the general contractor for the renovation project. They renovated the 15,000-square-foot structure was renovated with great attention to period detail. Parker’s moved into the new corporate headquarters in the heart of Savannah, Ga.’s National Landmark Historic District in February 2015.  

“Parker’s has done a first-class job restoring the Philbrick-Eastman House,” said Daniel Carey, president and CEO of Historic Savannah Foundation. “This project represents the spirit of revitalization that has helped make Savannah a national model for responsible historic preservation.”

“We paid attention to every detail to ensure that the restoration of this treasured Savannah building respects the structure’s history while enabling us to expand our operations right here in America’s most beautiful city,” said Greg Parker, president and CEO of Parker’s. “We felt a deep sense of responsibility to restore this landmark building to its former glory.”

Each year, Historic Savannah Foundation celebrates the best of preservation by presenting Historic Preservation Awards to individuals and organizations whose contributions demonstrate excellence in historic preservation in Savannah and Chatham County. The foundation judges the candidate’s success in the preservation, rehabilitation, restoration and interpretation of Savannah’s architectural and cultural heritage.

Savannah-based Parker’s currently operates 37 convenience stores across the region.
