QuickChek Goes Long ... Island

Opening first convenience store in market in October as beachhead for 20 to 30 locations

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. --QuickChek Corp., based in Whitehouse Station, N.J., will stage a "soft opening" to identify problems, followed by an Oct. 27 grand opening at its first convenience store and gas station on Long Island in Lake Grove, N.Y., John Schaninger, vice president for sales and marketing, told Newsday.

Schaninger said the 24-hour outlet in Suffolk County will employ 30 to 50 people.

The chain also is seeking municipal clearance for locations in Bayport and Seaford, though further expansion will hinge on the performance of the initial stores in the market, said the report. Schaninger told the newspaper that he envisions expanding that beachhead to as many as 20 or 30 stores.

"We don't have a hard, set-in-stone timeline," he added.

Schaninger said QuickChek sees its market within a 75-mile radius of Manhattan, and Long Island, with demographics similar to the company's New Jersey market, was a natural extension.

QuickChek operates 138 retail locations throughout New Jersey and New York’s Hudson Valley, including 11 pharmacy stores and 45 locations with fuel. The family-owned and operated chain has been named one of the Best Places to Work in both New Jersey and New York.
