Career, corporate moves at Kwik Trip, Thorntons, Tri-State, Byrne Dairy, NOCO, more

MESA, Ariz. -- The staff of CSPedia, CSP Business Media's online encyclopedia of convenience-store chains, gathers news and insights and updates the listings for the nearly 500 retailers in its database on a daily basis. CSPedia delivers a monthly summary of these reports, often news not yet announced publicly, to its subscribers.

Here is a collection of some of the news and people updates from April 2015.

People on the Move

  • Cubby's. Dan Roy has been named regional supervisor. He previously was a store manager for the Omaha, Neb., chain.
  • Holmes Oil, dba Cruizers. David Dorner has joined as foodservice manager for the Cruizers stores. Holmes Oil operates 25 stores in North Carolina, including one new site this year.
  • Kwik Trip. CEO and President Don Zietlow and his family are being honored by The Salvation Army La Crosse (Wisconsin) and awarded the Community Red Shield Award, a recognition given to those who are making an impact on the community.
  • Shipley Energy Inc. Dave Gruno has been promoted to president of the York, Pa.-based company, and Paul Marusvewski is the new director of IT. The company operates six convenience stores and travel center in Pennsylvania.
  • Thorntons. Keith Sherman has joined Thorntons as vice president of human resources. Brenda Stackhouse, longtime employee and former executive vice president, has retired. Rob Koller has joined the Kentucky chain of 181 stores as director of local store marketing. Bob Hammond is vice president of store operations in the northern division, and Ronnie Davis is vice president of construction and environmental issues.
  • Tri-State Petroleum. Frank White, former director of retail operations, has left the Wheeling, W.Va.-based chain and operates his own marketing company, White Knight Marketing.

In the News

  • Byrne Dairy is building a 7,030-square-foot store in Lafayette, N.Y., that it expects to open later this year. The company is based in Weedsport, N.Y., and operates 52 stores.
  • Cenex Zip Trip stores are now offering breakfast and lunch items provided by Core-Mark. The chain operates 70 stores in the Spokane, Wash., area.
  • Clyde's Market, with 43 sites in Georgia, is experimenting with a barbecue concept called Rusty Pig, and a Baldinos Giant Jersey Subs QSR.
  • East End Marketing, a New York chain with five company-operated stores and 27 franchised sites, is building one new store that is slated to open this summer. It also has added E85 fuel at about 10 sites.
  • Enmark Stations Inc. has completed a rollout of NCR Radiant for its point-of-sale (POS) system and has added kiosks at some stores for self-serve food ordering. The chain operates 64 stores in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
  • NOCO Express became a Tim Hortons franchisee, opening its first outlet at a store in Tonawanda, N.Y. The chain also added U-Swirl frozen yogurt at the Grand Island, N.Y. store. The New York-based chain operates 37 stores.
  • Par Petroleum Corp. operates 116 stores and stations in Hawaii after closing on the acquisition of Koko'oha Investments Inc. and its Mid Pac Petroleum LLC. The Honolulu-based chain has engaged a market research company to help it develop a brand strategy for the Hawaii sites.
  • Cambridge, Ohio-based The Hartley Co. has selected Farmer Brothers as its coffee and tea provider. The chain of 49 Starfire stores has a private-label coffee program called Brewnos.
  • The United Family has opened its first United Express gas station and c-store in the West Texas town of Abilene. The chain of supermarkets and c-stores is based in Lubbock, Texas.
  • Louisville, Ky.-based Thorntons opened its newest store in April, bringing the store count to 181. The loyalty program, called Refreshing Rewards, continues to grow and be recognized as a top loyalty program in the industry.
