A monthly digest from CSPedia, the convenience store industry's online directory

MESA, Ariz. -- The staff of CSPedia, CSP Business Media's online encyclopedia of convenience store chains, gathers news and insights and updates the listings for the nearly 500 retailers in its database on a daily basis. CSPedia delivers a monthly summary of these reports, often news not yet announced publicly, to its subscribers.

People on the Move

  •  CANEX (Canadian Forces Exchange System) dba ExpressMart. Gerry Mahon, formerly president of CANEX, has left the company. His position has not been filled.
  • Empire Petroleum Partners. Ted Roccagli has been named director of partnerships and preferred vendor programs for the Texas company, which has a large dealer network and owns and operates 88 convenience stores.
  • Express Stop AZ LLC. Pricebook coordinator/buyer Deb Scalise has left the company. Glen Smith has taken over pricebook duties and all buying except non-alcohol packaged beverages, which Tammie Garner handles.
  • GF Convenience LLC (Eagle Stop)/Gier Oil Co. Ed House is CFO and helps make buying decisions.
  • J&H Oil. Sandy Arrasmith, vice president of foodservice and operations, is retiring at the end of January. Misty Steinhauer is the primary vendor contact.
  • Kum & Go LC. Connie Kelehan is category manager for dispensed beverages; Matt Spackman joined as vice president of business insights and analytics; Erin Kouri is category manager for private label, replacing Melissa Billman.
  • Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores. Brian Street is foodservice manager.
  • Nouria Energy. Bob Windt, former foodservice manager, has left the company. The company is looking for a replacement, but the position has not yet been filled. Nouria is based in Massachusetts and operates 83 Lil' Mart stores.
  • RaceTrac Petroleum Inc. dba RaceTrac, RaceWay. Billy Milam, chief operating officer, took over as president of RaceTrac Petroleum as of Jan. 1, 2015, following the retirement of Max Lenker.
  • Stewart's Shops. Tom Lewis, real estate, has retired and Chuck Marshall has assumed his position.
  • Tri-State Petroleum Inc. Al Bertwell has left the company, and his duties as fuel operations manager have been assumed by John Berry, business development manager.
  • Wholesale Fuels Co. dba Fuelco Foodsmart. Ayman Ibrahim, operations manager, replaced Watson Eljamal, former purchasing manager. Kal Manny, former vice president, has left the company.

In the News

  • Quebec-based Alimentation Couche-Tard (Mac's, Circle K) is purchasing The Pantry and its Kangaroo Express brand for $1.7 billion. Couche-Tard has 8,500 locations in North America.
  • Arizona chain Bro Retail Group Inc. (4 Sons) has added a growler-station program for craft beers in its 21 stores.
  • Douglass Distributing, operator of Lone Star Food Stores, is opening two new stores in early 2015 and adding a fresh-brewed-tea program at several of its Texas sites.
  • Delek U.S. Holdings Inc. (Mapco) has switched coffee providers from Royal Cup to S&D. The Tennessee chain owns and operates 366 stores, with 100 dealer-jobber sites.
  • Empire Petroleum Partners and Atlas Oil Co. have combined their retail dealer businesses, with Empire expanding to a national fuel distributor. Earlier, Empire acquired 13 former Corner Store locations from CST Brands Inc.
  • Illinois-based FKG Oil Co. (Moto Mart) has remodeled 17 of its 73 stores with updated paint and lighting. The chain plans to increase its offering of energy drinks and green products, from household supplies to power bars.
  • Garvin Oil Co. (Kent's Korner) is out of the c-store business, with all remaining stores in process of being sold. The chain was based in South Carolina.
  • Gate Petroleum is opening a new store near its headquarters in Jacksonville, Fla., in January, bringing store count to 73 company-owned and -operated sites.
  • The former Medallion Oil convenience stores in Florida (61 Chevron sites) have been taken over by Kelly Capital and rebranded New Start. Each site is operated by an independent dealer.
  • PDQ Food Stores Inc. has sold all of its Minnesota stores, leaving stores in California and Wisconsin, with a total of 34 locations.
  • South Carolina chain The Spinx Co. Inc. will convert 13 stations to the Shell brand. The chain owns and operates 81 stores.
  • Victron Energy Inc., with 140 leased sites in Texas, opened five stores in 2014 branded Shell, and it plans to add 10 more stores in 2015.
