S.D. Town Suits Cubby's to a Tea

Chain adding six stores in state, including Kum & Go rebrand; QuikTrip expanding too
TEA, S.D. -- The Kum & Go/Cenex gas station on in Tea, S.D., will soon be under new management, reported The Champion. Within a month, "Cubby's" signs will replace the Kum & Go signs at that location. And Kum & Go-branded merchandise, such as Hiland snack chips and Nuclear energy drinks, will be replaced with new brands. Omaha, Neb.-based Cubby's won the contract to operate six new stores in South Dakota, according to Cubby's president Richard Cosaert. The fuel remand Cenex branded.

There are two Cubby's stores in Mitchell, said the report. The company [image-nocss] will add four convenience stores in Sioux Falls, one in Dell Rapids and the store in Tea.

While there are two Cubby's stores in Omaha, Tea is more like a Cubby's town, Cosaert told the newspaper. "We really like Tea," Coasaert said. "Most of our volume is in smaller areas. We try to be a part of the community."

Cubby's 27 stores are scattered across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, as well as parts of South Dakota. The contract was a way for the company to get a foothold in southeast South Dakota, Cosaert said.

All eight of the Tea Kum & Go store's employees will stay on after the mid-April switch, Manager Jennfier Wiese told the paper.

The store has changed hands and purposes numerous times over the years, the report said. Cenex took over the station from Pam Fuels in 1997, city finance officer Dawn Murphy told the paper. Previously, the store had been called Pump & Pak. In 2003, Kum & Go signed an operating agreement with Cenex. For years, it was branded Kerr-McGee. In the 1950s, it was M&J's Convenience.

Separately, Tulsa, Okla.-based QuikTrip Corp. told CSP Daily News that it opened two more stores last week, one in Euliss, Texas, and one in McDonough, Ga. Another store opened in Phoenix today, he added.

Manager of public and government affairs Mike Thornbrugh said these additions give the chain 62 stores in its Dallas/Fort Worth division and 114 stores in its Atlanta division. "Our total store count is now at 521," he said.

Thornbrugh recently told The Tulsa World that the company is "really in an expansion mode." He added, "QuikTrip is experiencing more growth than I've ever seen." (Click here for previous coverage.)
