BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Sheetz Inc. is primed to build a new distribution center in North Carolina or Virginia, as the convenience-store chain continues its expansion in the Southeast.
If Burlington, N.C., and the local county agree to the incentives requested by Sheetz, the company may invest millions of dollars into the community and create more than 250 jobs, according to a MyFox8.com report.
Sheetz has asked for more than $1 million worth of incentives and infrastructure from both the city and Alamance County. If the concessions are made, Sheetz promises to invest more than $32 million into the area.
“They’ve still got options. We’re option A, if you will. We need to finish everything we’ve been talking about for option A to be the ultimate choice,” Mac Williams, president of the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce, told MyFox8.
According to Williams, the company is also considering another location. The competing location was not confirmed, but Williams said it was probably in Virginia.
County, city officials and the company are taking everything into consideration regarding the proposed distribution center.
“It’s an important [decision] because of who it is, what they do, the sector that they’re in, their future growth,” said Williams, who has been working on the project for almost a year.
The company’s public relations manager Monica Jones told MyFox8 Sheetz wants to build 30 new stores in the next year, most of those in North Carolina. With a distribution center in Burlington, the company can stock stores throughout the south.
“It’s just a very growing area of the country … pretty dynamic. So far, the communities we’ve served in North Carolina have been great to us. Since we’re expanding farther south, it just seemed like the next logical step for us,” Jones said.
The proposed food distribution center would be the chain’s second hub. The other is located in Pennsylvania.
A public hearing on the matter is set for Tuesday, Sept. 4.
