Sheetz Adds Another W.Va. Store

Opening of Martinsburg store includes local Little League donation
ALTOONA, Pa. -- Sheetz Inc. opened a new convenience store location in Martinsburg, W.Va., on Thursday. Employees hosted a grand-opening celebration with a ribbon-cutting ceremony welcoming customers and the media. The company is also planning stores in Johnstown and Manchester Township, Pa.

"For more than 20 years we have been a part of the Martinsburg community, and we are glad to continue showing our devotion to serving the needs of our customers there," said Stan Sheetz, president and CEO of the Altoona, Pa.-based chain. "The people there have been a loyal fan base to [image-nocss] us."

The 5,500-square-foot c-store will offer customers fresh food items like the MTGo! and Shweetz Bakery lines of sandwiches, wraps, donuts and muffins, along with the signature MTO line of Angus beef burgers, premium grilled chicken sandwiches, freshly made salads, French fries, onion rings and more.

Sheetz Bros. Coffeez, a full-service espresso and smoothie bar staffed by a trained barista is going to be available at the new store, as well. Customers can order handmade specialty coffee drinks including lattes, cappuccinos and mochashot, frozen or iced. Sheetz also offers premium brewed self-serve coffees made from 100% Arabica beans in a variety of flavors such as Breakfast Blend, Serious Dark Roast, 100% Colombian and Hazelnut.

As always, customers will place their food and specialty coffee orders at touchscreen order kiosks. A surcharge-free ATM and variety of retailer gift and phone cards will be available to customers, as well.

As a part of the celebration Sheetz will be making a donation to Martinsburg Little League. "Sheetz has a long time tradition of giving back to the communities in which we serve," said Stan Sheetz. "It's important to us to be involved in the development of children through educational and recreational activities."

Meanwhile, Sheetz has submitted a proposal to replace and expand its store in Johnstown, Pa.'s Kernville neighborhood, reported The Tribune-Democrat. The project, with a price tag estimated at more than $1.5 million, would include a 5,000-sq.-ft. store and extend the new Sheetz for a full block. The company opened the current store there in early 1989.

Also, plans are in motion for Sheetz to build a nearly 5,000-sq.-ft. store in Manchester Township, Pa., reported The York Daily Record. Once opened, the store will employ 30 to 50 workers and feature seven gasoline dispensers with 14 fueling stations, Mike LaCesa, director of real estate for the eastern region for the company, told the newspaper.

Sheetz has yet to place the store on its construction schedule and is instead waiting for word from the developer that the project has garnered its permit from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, LaCesa said. PennDOT is not expected to issue the permit until late September, Themi Sacarellos, co-owner and developer of the land, told the paper. Road work, in addition to the Sheetz' construction, could start next spring, Sacarellos added.

"We would like to be there as soon as we can," LaCesa said.

With more than $4.9 billion in revenue for 2008 and more than 12,000 employees, the family-owned and -operated company operates more than 350 convenience locations throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. All Sheetz stores are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
