Thorntons Sells Four Connecticut C-Stores to Cumberland Farms

Retailer focusing on expansion in core markets

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Thorntons Inc. has announced the closing of the sale of its four Connecticut store locations to Cumberland Farms. Thorntons said it sold these locations to better align with its overall business plan and core operations in the Midwest and South.

After the closing, Thorntons will operate 161 stores across five states in the Midwest and southern United StatesIllinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee.

The company said that it will continue to expand and build in its current markets, and that in December 2009, it opened six new store locations, [image-nocss] increasing its total store count for the year.

It opened four new stores in Nashville, Tenn., expanding the market to 10 locations in two-and-a-half years. It also opened a new store in the Chicago suburb of East Dundee, Ill., and another location in Champaign, Ill.

Louisville, Ky.-based Thorntons is a leading independent gasoline/convenience chain retailer, marketing throughout the Midwest under the brand name of Thorntons Quick Cafe and Market. The Louisville, Ky.-based company operates 161 gasoline/convenience stores, one travel plaza and eight car washes. It also distributes its petroleum products through the wholly owned Thornton Transportation Co. and operates a river-bulk-storage terminal in Louisville.

Framingham, Mass.-based Cumberland Farms' network of retail stores, gas stations and a support system including petroleum and grocery distribution operations spans 11 states across the Northeast and Florida, making it the largest convenience store and petroleum marketer in the Northeast. Its affiliate, Gulf Oil LP, distributes motor fuels through a network of more than 1,800 Gulf-branded stations, 12 proprietary oil terminals and a network of more than 50 other supply terminals. It supplies heating oil, diesel fuel, jet fuel and kerosene to these branded retail outlets through both its Gulf brand and, in the seven states of New England and New York, the Exxon brand.
