Western Refining Layoffs Part of Northern Tier Deal

Refiner-marketer seeking synergies, right size following acquisition

EL PASO, Texas --Western Refining Inc. has laid off an unspecified number of employees, reported El Paso Inc.

“We did have a few people that we laid off yesterday,” spokesperson Gary Hanson told the news outlet, which had received information that the company had laid off about 10% of its El Paso, Texas, workforce.

He would not confirm the number. But he said the move had nothing to do with the company’s finances or stock prices.

“This is a part of the merger with Northern Tier Energy,” he said. “So now, we’re reassessing our business, looking for some synergies and trying to make sure we are correctly sized. I can’t get into specifics, but it was significantly less than the [10%],” he said. “We still have over 800 employees in El Paso. The ones we had to take this action with we made sure that we had a generous severance package with benefits and compensation.”

In June, Western Refining completed the $1.6 billion acquisition of Tempe, Ariz.-based Northern Tier, a downstream energy company with refining, retail and logistics operations.

Western Refining is an independent refining and marketing company that operates refineries in El Paso; Gallup, N.M.; and St. Paul Park, Minn. The company’s retail operations include gas stations and convenience stores in Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, New Mexico, Texas and Wisconsin, with approximately 265 stores primarily under the Giant and Howdy’s brands and approximately 275 stores under the SuperAmerica brand.
