BATON ROUGE, La. -- Eight months after Buc-ee’s Ltd. announced its plans to open one of its mega-convenience stores in Louisiana—its first outside of Texas—the company revealed it had canceled its plans for the Bayou State.
Buc-ee’s has more than 30 convenience stores in Texas. The chain, which sports a Beaver mascot, is known for its large stores, broad merchandise mix, clean restrooms and high-volume fueling, as well as its billboards.
A representative with the company told WBRZ that the company made the decision to pull out of Louisiana because it could not secure additional locations in Louisiana.
Jeff Nadalo, general counsel for Lake Jackson, Texas-based Buc-ee’s, told the news outlet that the company’s business model is to operate numerous stores near each other to “overcome the regulatory costs, management costs and out-of-state costs” associated with operating the business.
“To date, we have only been able to secure one site. As a result, we have decided not to move forward in Baton Rouge. Buc-ee’s is excited to continue its pursuit of going outside of Texas, but for now needs to pursue a growth strategy that makes sense for the company, its employees and, most importantly, Buc-ee’s customers,” he said.
Nadalo did not address whether the decision had anything to do with reports of flooding on the proposed store site, said the report.
