Maxey Energy, a 17-store chain based in Uvalde, Texas, opened its sophisticated convenience-store concept 5 Points Market in Kerrville, Texas, in August 2014 in response to new competitors drawn by the recent shale-oil boom.
Here's a look at some of the features of the store:
The site features a big craft-beer selection, a wine endcap and an upscale coffee bar.
A cutting-edge soda fountain is a highlight of the foodservice offer. The chain had made a small acquisition and examined which foodservice items did well that its legacy sites could adopt. These included corn dogs and burritos.
While some Maxey Energy sites offer hand-dipped ice cream, the chain brought a f'real milkshake machine to the Kerrville store.
Even with the oil boom largely busted in Kerrville, Maxey Energy said the plan for 2016 and 2017 is to continue to invest in and improve the foodservice offer while refreshing all of its sites, including a cold vault that features LED lighting.
At Maxey Energy’s Cotulla, Texas, site, business began tapering toward the end of 2014. By 2015, it dried up, with sales off 40% from their boom peak. Compared to earlier, pre-2011 averages, however, sales are down a more modest 10%.
Similarly, the store’s fuel volumes fell 40% to 50% from their 2012 peak. But compared to the pre-boom average, they are about flat.
