Shell spreads its rewards reach to include Chicago-area supermarket chain

CHICAGO -- Shell has now counted in the Jewel-Osco supermarket chain as a partner in the oil-company's coalition-style loyalty program, with the grocer being one of the largest in the Chicago metropolitan area. The move puts Shell's program in 31 states and more than 130 markets.

Launching the "My Jewel-Osco Fuel Rewards" program means Jewel-Osco customers can earn fuel savings while shopping at the supermarket, with rewards being redeemable at participating Shell stations, officials with the Houston-based Shell said.

For every $50 spent in qualified purchases at participating Jewel-Osco stores, consumers can earn a savings of 5 cents per gallon on fuel redeemable on a single fillup--up to 20 gallons at any one of more than 350 local participating Shell stations.

In addition, Fuel Rewards savings earned through the program accumulate, so the more consumers spend at participating Jewel-Osco stores, the more Fuel Rewards savings they earn. As an example, if consumers spend $100, they will earn a savings of 10 cents per gallon. If consumers spend $250, they will earn a savings of 25 cents per gallon.

Qualifying purchases are automatically tracked and each time the customer reaches a $50 threshold, he or she receives another five-cents-per-gallon reward on fuel. Fuel Rewards savings will expire the last day of the month following the month they were earned.

"Jewel-Osco is pleased to be able to offer local consumers the opportunity to save money on fuel. We recognize that today's consumers are continually looking for increased value, and the My Jewel-Osco Fuel Rewards program provides them with an easy way to save," said Melissa Pursley, director of marketing for Jewel-Osco.

"Shell is helping local Jewel-Osco consumers save money at the pump," said Dan Little, fuels marketing manager for Shell North America. "With participating Shell stations conveniently located throughout Chicago, it has never been easier for consumers to save on Shell's nitrogen-enriched gasoline, including our premium gasoline, Shell V-Power."

Later this year in the Chicago area, Shell's loyalty technology partner, Excentus Corp., Dallas, will also launch the "Fuel Rewards Network" (FRN) program, a rewards program that will allow consumers to save significantly more at the pump by expanding the ways they can earn rewards (See Related Content below for previous CSP Daily News coverage of FRN.)

The My Jewel-Osco Fuel Rewards program is part of the FRN program, so consumers can combine rewards from their grocery purchases with other purchases like clothing and dining out for savings at the pump.

To start earning more rewards through the FRN program in the Chicago area, consumers can create an FRN account at fuelrewards.com with their My Jewel-Osco Rewards Card, and turn shopping and dining purchases into savings on fuel at participating Shell stations. FRN members who have registered at fuelrewards.com have exclusive access to the dining, e-coupons and online-mall programs also available through the FRN program.
