Following a ribbon-cutting ceremony Nov. 18, the store arranged for Old Bridge police officers and firefighters to engage in a hoagie-building competition for charity. The police won out in the timed event, garnering a $1,000 donation from Wawa for the township's Cops for Kids program, according to a report in the Old Bridge Suburban. The firefighters donated their $500 second-place prize to Saint Barnabas Medical Center, West Orange.[image-nocss]
But it was far from a clean fight; the town's finest and bravest then engaged in a good old-fashioned food fight to wind up the event outside the new store.
During the ribbon cutting, Wawa's head of supply chain logistics and fuel, Jim Bluebello, gave remarks and offered special recognition to the local police, fire and first aid departments, saluting their efforts to keep the local communities safe, according to the report.
The new store, which opened Nov. 17, features Wawa's latest design prototype, including 4,600 square feet of retail space and additional gasoline pumping stations, as well as new in-store graphics, colors, restroom design and merchandising features. John McKinnon is serving as the store's general manager, leading a team of nearly 50 employees.
"I know I speak for Wawa and the community when I say that we all recognize the great importance of firefighters and police who work tirelessly every day to keep our communities safe," said McKinnon. "Our grand-opening celebration is a wonderful way to bring the community and our local heroes together."
The Old Bridge store offers customers numerous Wawa brands, such as the award-winning Wawa coffee, which sells 195 million cups annually; the Sizzli a hot breakfast sandwich; a full-service deli; bakery; built-to-order hoagies; and Wawa's beverage line of dairy products, juices and teas.
Wawa's branded gasoline operation includes eight gasoline dispenser sections that can fuel 16 cars at once.
Privately held Wawa Inc., headquartered in Wawa, Pa., has more than 570 c-stores throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia.
