Wawa introduces its first app, mobile payment option

WAWA, Pa. -- If paying for a Wawa-style hoagie with the tap of an app away was on anyone's wish list, that dream is now rolling out.

Since the start of the new year, all of Wawa's more than 680 convenience stores are accepting mobile payments through the chain's new mobile app, enabling customers to make in-store purchases using a Wawa Gift Card from their smart phones, the company just announced.

"Part of our commitment to fulfilling customers' lives every day includes connecting with customers at deeper levels and providing meaningful and time-saving technologies," said Chris Gheysens, president and CEO of Wawa. "That will help us create the added convenience and connection points that our customers desire."

In addition to enabling these mobile payments, Wawa's new app lets customers do the following:

  • Manage Wawa cards: Customers can register a Wawa gift card to earn Wawa Rewards and check balances. They can reload those cards at any time.
  • Redeem Wawa rewards: Customers can use rewards in the store by redeeming coupons from their phones.
  • Find a nearby Wawa store: They can also get hours of operation and directions.
  • Check fuel prices: Customers can find out real-time fuel prices at Wawa fuel stores.
  • View nutrition information: Users can plan a meal and find out nutritional content.
  • Connect with friends on social media: The app also allows customers to use digital check-ins.

The Wawa app also allows customers to access the new Wawa Rewards program, offering customers a chance to earn rewards for purchasing Wawa products.

Here's how it works.

Step 1: Sign up via the Wawa mobile app or WawaRewards.com.

Step 2: Add a Wawa gift card to the customer's Wawa Rewards account through the app or WawaRewards.com. Customers get a reward for adding that first card.

Step 3: Pay for in-store purchases with the registered gift card using the Wawa app or the actual card.

Step 4: Get the customers' choice of three rewards for every $50 spent on qualifying items.

"We hope the new Wawa app and Wawa Rewards program will further extend the unique bond our associates have established with our customer over the past 50 years through new forms of connectivity and customer recognition," Gheysens said.

Wawa Inc., based in Wawa, Pa., is a privately held company with more than 680 convenience stores, more than 415 offering gasoline.
