Kroger to Upgrade 10,000 Fuel Pumps for EMV

Implementation covers more than 2,100 sites

CINCINNATI – The Kroger Co. will upgrade 10,000 fuel pumps to meet new credit-card standards for EMV-chip card readers.

The grocery and convenience-store retailer has entered into an agreement with Wayne Fueling Systems for the EMV upgrade of fuel dispensers at more than 2,100 sites across the United States.

Wayne will provide the new Wayne iX Pay T7 secure payment terminal retrofit kit for many of Kroger’s legacy fuel dispensers in the field, regardless of original equipment manufacturer; EMV card readers; the Wayne Connect IP-485 network solution; jade boards; and other iX Pay secure payment platform upgrades for non-PCI locations.

EMV is the global standard created by EuroPay, MasterCard and Visa to securely authenticate credit- and debit-card transactions, which helps reduce counterfeit payment-card fraud.

For this project, Wayne will provide full turnkey deployment, including project management, materials, planning, logistics and installation services.

“We selected Wayne because of their comprehensive solution that can be applied to all fuel points, regardless of dispenser brand,” said Kirk Ball, chief technology officer for Kroger.

Austin, Texas-based Wayne Fueling Systems is a major supplier of fuel dispensers, payment terminals, forecourt control devices, point-of-sale (POS) and other measurement and control solutions to the retail and commercial fueling industry.

Based in Cincinnati, Kroger owns approximately 2,780 supermarkets with 1,390 fuel centers under a variety of banners in 35 states and the District of Columbia. It also owns approximately 785 convenience stores, about 725 with fuel, under six banners in 19 states: Kwik Shop, Loaf N’ Jug, Quik Stop Markets, Tom Thumb Food Stores, Turkey Hill Minit Markets and Smith’s Express.
