New EMV Pump Hits Market

Gilbarco introduces ‘next generation’ chip-card dispenser

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Gilbarco Veeder-Root has announced the launch of FlexPay IV as its next-generation line of EMV-certified dispenser-based payment terminals. Gilbarco jointly developed FlexPay IV with Verifone, a payments solutions provider, to enable gas stations and convenience stores to securely accept Europay MasterCard Visa (EMV) or chip-card payments from consumers at the pump.

As one of the the first Payment Card Industry (PCI) 4.x-certified fuel-dispenser payment terminals in the United States that supports EMV, Gilbarco’s FlexPay IV provides retailers the ability to upgrade their fuel dispensers in advance of the October 2017 EMV liability shift, which applies to the petroleum forecourt.

FlexPay IV also supports near-field communications (NFC), mobile wallets, encryption and two-dimensional bar-code scanning, as well as future regulatory changes, Gilbarco officials said.

“EMV acceptance at the fuel dispenser is top of mind among gas stations and convenience stores, as the EMV liability shift is less than a year and a half away for this industry,” said Jennifer Miles, president of Verifone, North America, San Jose, Calif. “Through this partnership, Verifone and Gilbarco are able to help retailers not only meet payments and regulatory needs in an increasingly complex ecosystem, but also enhance the consumer experience. Because FlexPay IV is a commerce-enabled device, merchants will get much more from their investment than EMV payment acceptance.”

The dispenser also gives retailers—through Applause TV powered by Verifone's Pump Media—to engage consumers fueling their cars with news and entertainment, along with product advertisements that help drive consumers from the pump into the c-store.  Pump Media from Verifone Media is one of the largest digital out-of-home (DOOH) networks in the petroleum forecourt market.

“FlexPay IV represents unprecedented technology integration from two market leaders, solving retailer challenges regarding payment security, media and emerging payment technologies,” said Steve Moule, president of Gilbarco North America, Greensboro, N.C. “We are pleased to see our global partnership with Verifone continue to yield significant benefits for our customers.”

FlexPay IV is now available in new Gilbarco Encore 700 S dispensers and also as a retrofit for legacy dispensers installed in the field.

Gilbarco will showcase FlexPay IV May 17-20 at its annual Retail Technology Conference in Hilton Head, S.C.
