MFA Oil Acquisition Brings New Brand

Deal adds ‘significant amount’ of fuel volume to fuel supplier, retailer

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- MFA Oil Co. has acquired Brownfield Oil Co., a refined fuels and lubricants supplier based in Moberly, Mo. The purchase includes a Sinclair gas station in Shelbina, Mo., and a Sinclair cardlock fueling facility in Kirksville, Mo.

Through this acquisition, APM will add Sinclair fuels and branding options to its offerings.

“This acquisition made a lot of sense for our company,” said Don Smith, MFA Oil director of mergers and acquisitions. “Besides adding a significant amount of fuel volume to our operations, it will allow us to better serve our mid-Missouri customers by greatly improving our operating efficiencies.”

The Brownfield Oil purchase will provide substantial growth to APM, MFA Oil’s wholesale petroleum distribution division. APM provides a broad spectrum of quality fuel products to retail and convenience stores across the Midwest.

This is MFA Oil’s fifth acquisition of its fiscal year, which began Sept. 1, 2015. Previous acquisitions include Lybarger Oil Inc. in Garnett, Kansas; Elaine Petroleum Distribution Inc. in Elaine, Ark.; R&S Propane Inc. in Dibble, Okla.; and S&S Oil & Propane Co. Inc. in Emporia, Kansas.

The company plans to continue evaluating acquisition opportunities in its existing market area and other states where it can expand its footprint.

Brownfield Oil was founded in 1971 by Robert Brownfield. Since 1990, Matt Brownfield has overseen the growth and expansion of the company. Throughout the company’s 45 years of operation it has provided fuel and lubricants, branding options and transportation services to customers throughout northern Missouri.

Brownfield Oil will retain its transportation services business and some staff as part of the deal. The remaining employees will join the MFA Oil team.

“I would like to thank all my customers for their business and loyalty through the years,” said Matt Brownfield, president of Brownfield Oil. “This decision would not have been made unless I was confident MFA Oil would take excellent care of them moving forward.”

Columbia, Mo.-based MFA Oil is a farmer-owned cooperative with more than 40,000 members. The company is the largest supplier of propane in Missouri and created the Break Time convenience stores in 1985 through its subsidiary, MFA Petroleum, which also operates the Big O Tire and Jiffy Lube franchises in mid-Missouri. In addition to propane, MFA Oil also sells fuels and lubricants to customers in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Iowa, many through unmanned fuel lots throughout the region. There are 78 Break Time c-stores in Missouri and Arkansas.
