Giant Oil has acquired 13 former Thorntons convenience stores and one development lot from Chicago-based bp. The sites are in Columbus, Ohio, and Lexington, Kentucky.
Giant Oil said on Thursday that it had started rebranding all 13 retail sites to its On The Fly convenience-store banner. The stores bring new scale and density to Giant Oil’s network in two of the region’s most important markets, the company said.
The Ohio and Kentucky locations join On The Fly’s 120 stores in Indiana, Mississippi, Florida and Pennsylvania, according to its website.
“We’re excited to grow our brand in new cities and welcome new members to the On The Fly team,” said Hadeel Ali, Giant Oil’s marketing director. “We hope the community falls in love with our offers, like our hot foods, drinks and loyalty program, while trusting our goal to always be their reliable neighborhood store.”
Giant Oil said its relationship with bp spans 26 years, and the acquisition is the next chapter of the relationship. All converted store locations will move to Amoco-branded fuel, a bp brand. On March 17, bp said its Amoco brand had surpassed 1,000 locations across 26 states and Washington, D.C.
A bp spokesperson told CSP that it made a “strategic decision to sell a small number of Thorntons company-owned locations” to Giant Oil. bp has previously said it is reshaping its retail network and plans to exit about 10% of its company-owned sites.
“This is part of our effort to continue optimizing our retail portfolio and high grading our network across the U.S.,” the spokesperson said. “We look forward to continuing to serve our Thorntons guests throughout the Midwest and Florida.”
