Anabi Oil Corp. has purchased 12 Pleasanton, California-based C&J Cox Corp.’s convenience stores, which operate under the Cox Family Stores brand in California’s Tri-Valley and Lake Tahoe communities.
Matrix Capital Markets Group, which provided merger and acquisition advisory services to Cox, announced the deal Thursday in a news release. The transaction closed Nov. 12.
Upland, California-based Anabi Oil acquired nine stores in the Tri-Valley region and three stores in the Lake Tahoe area, according to Matrix. The convenience stores sell motor fuels under the Shell, Chevron and Valero brands. The Tri-Valley is in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Cox will continue to own and operate two locations in the Tri-Valley region, which were not part of the transaction. All Cox Family Stores are in California.
Anabi Oil, which owns the Rebel c-store brand, in October signed a definitive agreement to acquire Green Valley Grocery. The acquisition includes 87 Green Valley Grocery convenience stores across southern Nevada. Anabi Oil had 490 stores as of Jan. 1.

“The Cox family built one of the most admired convenience store networks in Northern California, and we consider it a privilege to continue that legacy,” said Sam Anabi, founder and owner of Anabi Oil. “Our focus is to preserve the level of quality their customers have trusted for decades. Because these sites were already operated with such discipline and pride, the transition has been exceptionally smooth: strong teams remain in place and service continues uninterrupted. We are proud to welcome these stores into our family.”
Cox Family Stores first opened its doors in 1976 when Carl Cox acquired his first convenience store in Dublin, California, according to the release.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Anabi Oil, founded in 1991, acquired the Rebel convenience-store brand from Las Vegas-based Rebel Oil Co. in 2016. In June 2024, Anabi Oil acquired the petroleum marketing, convenience retail and quick-service restaurant (QSR) businesses of Land O’Sun Management Corp., doing business as Fast Track, based in Gainesville, Florida.
