Carl Campbell, a newly appointed co-manager of a RaceTrac convenience store that back in June 1993 had a video-rental section, found himself shortstaffed the night an unassuming man wandered in and made eye contact.
Campbell apologized and said he’d be with the gentleman shortly. The customer smiled what would come to be known as his trademark smile, and started to browse the aisles. When Campbell got back to the customer, the stranger simply said, “Hi, I’m Carl Bolch. I work at RaceTrac and just wanted to say hello.”
Then he strolled back into the night.
