Straddling the Line

How Border Station plays off the North and South.

Everyone knows it’s impossible for a person to be in two places at the same time, but Russell Hastings comes pretty close.

As owner and manager of a 13,700-square-foot independent convenience store, he typically travels 30 or 40 times from North Carolina to Virginia and back in a single day. That’s because his business, appropriately named Border Station, straddles the North Carolina-Virginia line in a thinly  populated area between Chesapeake, Va. (pop. 224,000), and Moyock, N.C. (pop. 7,500).
