What I Learned at the Smoker Friendly Conference

Four lessons from the August event

The First Modified-Risk Approval Might Be for a Cigarette

22nd Century Group Inc., Williamsville, N.Y., believes it has two cigarettes that should qualify as modified risk: a low-nicotine option that could help wean smokers off cigarettes and a higher-nicotine option that allows smokers to puff fewer times.

Uncertainty Remains on Premium-Cigar Regs

In April, the FDA asked for feedback on whether premium cigars should be treated differently than the rest of the category. Though manufacturers are not optimistic premium cigars will be exempted, many believe the segment will be subject to less stringent regulations.

‘Cannabusiness’ Is Booming

Colorado retailers and residents are benefiting from marijuana legalization. Smoker Friendly’s accessories sales are thriving, and cannabis sales are so high that Colorado residents could receive a tax refund of $75 each.

Get Ready to Go Sour

Though tobacco was the highlight, the Rocky Mountain Cigar Festival also featured a number of Colorado’s craft breweries. IPAs might be everywhere today, but if the sampling was any indication, sours are about to blow up. My favorite? A tart porter aged in bourbon barrels.
