Opinion: Altering Perceptions

We in the convenience-store industry have an awful lot to be proud of. So my hat is off to NACS for making our industry’s perception one of the association’s key focuses in the coming year and beyond.

To me, the NACS Show is my official start to a new year. And because this is also an election year for control of Congress, I have no doubt there’ll be lots of talk about politics and its effect on the convenience-store industry.

On the surface, in what has been the slowest recovery in history, our channel--convenience stores--appears to be performing pretty well. But that is no surprise: We are a resilient, innovative group that always finds a way to win.

When you look at some of the challenges we have been struggling with for years, such as attracting the female shopper, I wonder why we don’t have more women in top positions or running organizations.

To prepare for the coming year, I always like to look back and reflect on where we’ve been and what we accomplished before setting my sights on the year ahead.

John’s success in not measured in dollars or the size of his company. It’s better measured in the people he has touched and the culture and team that he has fostered.
