Industry View: Embarking on Frontier Adventures

A brand-new RV makes thorough use of space through technology, taking every available inch and expanding living space when the vehicle was stationary for the night. The coolest reminded me of merchandising innovations such as mobile displays and suction-cup devices that create more efficient c-store spaces.

The beverage segment may well be convenience stores' front line of the battle for shopping trips, and it behooves operators to protect this niche and grow via the best means possible. Suggestion: Put your beer on ice.

Discovering what convenience store retailers deal with daily has been an adventure: inventory management, forecasting, write-offs, hiring, payroll, product development and logistics are among the areas that have become part of everyday activities for this old beer salesman. Cash flow was never part of my daily concerns, but it sure is now! From a more strategic perspective, our focus is now the culture that we are building, which will ultimately determine our company’s long-term viability.

As we recover from the annual gathering of leadership of the c-store industry, a time of reflection is called for as we head into the holiday season. As my family gathers around the Thanksgiving table, I find there is much to be thankful for.

A great beer renaissance is happening. In 1887, there were more than 2,000 U.S. breweries. By the 1980s, there were fewer than 100. Driven by the emergence of brewpubs and local microbreweries, there are now more than 2,400 breweries and countless new home brewers.

As winter draws to an end, the rites of the season manifest themselves. Spring-break trips to warmer climates beckon as the Grapefruit League gets under way, holding the promise of warm summer days.

When you’re selling fun stuff to good customers, you will make a lot of friends over time.

There are some nice benefits of working in today’s “virtual office.” A home office was the only viable option for a startup company such as mine, and the benefits are numerous.

As a veteran of more than three decades in the suds trade, I had a backstage pass for many innovations in beer: the emergence of light beer, ice beer, dry beer, day-fresh beer, flavored beer, packaged draft, mini-kegs, alumi­num bottles, beer food-pairing dinners and brewpubs.

Starting a band was high on my retirement bucket list.
