AUSTIN, Texas – Retailers can thank the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act for making their job a bit tougher. This landmark product-liability law has shifted more responsibility onto convenience stores for harmful defects of domestic and imported goods sold in their operations.
“It’s no longer the expectation that a manufacturer is the best position to protect consumers,” said Steve Burkhart, vice president and general counsel for Shelton, Conn.-based BIC Corp., at CSP’s Leadership and Crisis Prevention Forum in Austin, Texas. “It’s the expectation that retailers are in that position.”
