Gas Below $3 in 18 States

GasBuddy says as many as 33 states could drop below $3 by Thanksgiving

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. -- Motorists in Tulsa, Okla., Lubbock, Texas, and St. Louis are seeing retail gasoline prices poised to break below $3 as the average price for their respective markets, according to a GasBuddy report.

Already, St. Louis consumers are seeing some stations at $2.79, while Tulsa has some stations at $2.85 per gallon. In Lubbock on Oct. 8, consumers are paying as low as $2.89 or as high as $3.59 per gallon.

"While the direction of current prices reflect what we can expect for fourth-quarter fuel prices, it's certainly encouraging to see how many states already have stations with regular gas available for under $3," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.

"Our network of websites shows 18 states where motorists could access gasoline below $3 per gallon today: Missouri, South Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Virginia, New Mexico, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, New Jersey, Kansas, Georgia, Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio and Indiana," DeHaan said.

"If current supply and demand fundamentals remain unchanged and West Texas crude slips into the mid-$90s, then perhaps by Thanksgiving we could see as many as 33 states (two-thirds of the United States) with gas stations selling below $3," added GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst Gregg Laskoski.
