Casey’s General Stores has acquired eight convenience stores in Michigan from Maverik Inc., a spokesperson for Ankeny, Iowa-based Casey’s confirmed for CSP. Casey’s began operating the stores this week, the spokesperson said.

Maverik opened its first c-store in the state in Wyoming, Michigan, just southwest of Grand Rapids, this past May, the company announced on LinkedIn.

That store and the other seven locations—former Kum & Go c-stores picked up when Maverik acquired Kum & Go in August 2023 from the Krause Group—represented Salt Lake City-based Maverik’s entire portfolio in the state. The company began the process last year of rebranding Kum & Go’s approximately 400 stores with the intent to unify the entire combined footprint under the Maverik brand.

The eight Michigan stores are in Grand Rapids, Grandville, Kentwood, Walker and Wyoming.

Kum & Go opened its first location in Michigan in Walker in January 2023.

  • Casey’s General Stores Inc. is No. 3 on CSP2025 Top 202 ranking of convenience-store chains by store count. Maverik is No. 12.

In June, Maverik sold three Kum & Go c-stores in Nebraska to Mega Saver. In August, Maverik also sold 20 Kum & Go c-stores in Iowa to the Omaha, Nebraska-based retailer.

Under both the Maverik and Kum & Go brands, Maverik, with a total of more than 800-stores, operates in 20 states—Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming and Iowa.

Maverik did not respond to a CSP request for comment.

Casey’s has approximately 2,900 convenience stores in 19 states—Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

It opened its first location in Michigan in April 2018, in Watervliet, marking the 16th state of operation for the convenience-store chain, with plans for additional locations. It opened its second store in Michigan in Bridgman in December 2022. And it has a third store in Barrien Springs. The company also broke ground in Hartford, Michigan, on Sept. 11 on an additional location, according to the City of Hartford.
