Mondelez Drives Healthy Snacking

Initiatives are part of company’s 2020 'impact goals'

DEERFIELD, Ill. – Mondelez is making moves to position itself at the forefront of healthy snacking. Since 2017, the company’s “well-being” brands and portion-control snacks—treats that are individually wrapped and/or less than 200 calories—have grown at twice the rate of the company's base portfolio, garnering nearly 13% of its current revenue, according to a recent progress report from the company.

Mondelez looks to hit 15% by 2020.

The progress report provides an update to Mondelez’s 2020 "impact goals," a set of standards the company said in 2017 it wishes to reach. These goals focus on healthy eating and nutrition, sustainable agriculture, consumer safety, community partnerships and more.

“Having a positive impact on our planet and the communities we do business in is core to who we are as a company,” said Dirk Van de Put, chairman and CEO of Mondelez. “Today, we’re producing snacks more sustainably, with less energy, water and waste; and sourcing our key ingredients in ways that reduce deforestation in our supply chain. We’re empowering farmers and investing in community programs that help improve the well-being of children and their families.”

Mondelez said it has reduced sodium by 2% in Oreos and 1.4% across its entire snack portfolio, as well as decreased saturated fat by 2% in Ritz crackers. Its sugar total has also reduced, dropping 5% in Green & Black’s chocolates and by 1% percent in Mondelez’s BelVita brand, the company said.

Regarding sustainability, Mondelez said it has reduced carbon dioxide emissions from manufacturing by 10%, as well as reduced water use by 25% at locations where water is most scarce. The company’s sustainable cocoa sourcing program has also reached 120,500 farmers—up from 83,000 in 2016—in more than 1,000 communities.

Deerfield, Ill.-based Mondelez International is a leading global snacking company, operating in 160 countries with approximately $26 billion in net revenue in 2017. The company manufactures biscuits, chocolate, gum, candy and powdered beverages; its products include BelVita, Chips Ahoy, Oreo, Nabisco, Cadbury, Jacobs coffee, Tang powdered beverages and Trident gum.
