NEW YORK — American Express will delay its outside EMV deadline to April 16, 2021, for automated fuel dispensers, the New York-based credit card company told NACS.
The move follows Visa’s announcement that it would delay its deadline until April 17, 2021.
Mastercard and Discover have not yet announced updated deadlines. The responsibility for fraudulent transactions will shift to fuel retailers that have not upgraded their automated fuel dispensers to the new standard as of the deadline.
The change in date is in response to letters NACS, PMAA, SIGMA and NATSO sent to the four card networks managing the EMV liability shift. The letters requested the October deadline be delayed given the shelter-in-place or stay-at-home orders because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The coronavirus pandemic has made things more difficult for convenience stores to comply with the original October EMV conversion deadline,” said Anna Ready Blom, director of government relations for NACS. “American Express and Visa have both recognized the amount of work involved in EMV compliance, especially as these retailers are working hard to ensure their communities have access to household necessities, fuel and food during this time of social distancing.”
