Circle K Florida Settles Licensing Charges

Chain pays state $1 million, maintains check-cashing services

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Circle K on Sept. 4 paid Florida $1 million to settle accusations it operated an unlicensed check-cashing service for more than five years.

Circle K Florida

The Florida Office of Financial Regulation issued the initial complaint against Circle K Stores Inc. in January 2014, alleging that Circle K cashed checks without a license from January 2009 to February 2014, according to a report in the Orlando Business Journal. As part of the deal, Circle K neither admits nor denies wrongdoing, and it will be issued a Part III money-services business license, which will allow the stores to continue cashing checks.

“The Florida Office of Financial Regulation works diligently to protect consumers, ensuring that entities operating in Florida’s financial services arena are properly licensed to do business,” said Commissioner Drew J. Breakspear.

There are 413 stores in Circle K’s Florida region, and 69 locations within 20 miles of downtown Orlando. Circle K has more than 10,000 locations nationwide and is owned by Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., based in Laval, Quebec.
