HOUSTON — CITGO is officially EMV capable, allowing the refining company’s Gilbarco Veeder-Root dispensers to accept chip cards.

The ability to accept EMV is due to a new version of Passport Edge software from Gilbarco, the pump manufacturer’s tablet-based point-of-sale (POS) system. In addition to the Forecourt EMV, this new software also introduces several new features for the CITGO branded locations such as integrated electronic benefit transfer acceptance.

“We’re proud to release both the Passport and the Passport Edge as EMV-ready solutions across our network. Our customers’ payment security is one of our greatest concerns, and protecting our customers’ identity at the pump is something we take very seriously,” said Karl Schmidt, CITGO's vice president of supply and marketing.

With the forecourt EMV software available for CITGO and other Heartland Payment System brands, more than 70% of Passport customers have forecourt EMV software available to upgrade.

“Our partnership with CITGO to rapidly enable outdoor EMV enables their marketers to get ahead of the pack for turning on forecourt EMV,” said Eric Bagden, director of retail solutions for Gilbarco Veeder-Root. “With the October 2020 liability shift fast approaching, we continue to prioritize our development efforts to ensure Gilbarco customers have great solutions available to maximize site profitability while getting compliant for EMV.”

Gilbarco Veeder-Root, Greensboro, N.C., offers retail and commercial fueling operations solutions from the forecourt to the convenience store and head office. Major product lines include fuel dispensers, pump media, POS systems, payment systems, tank gauges, software development and integration, fleet-management systems and nozzles.

Houston-based CITGO Petroleum Corp. operates three refineries in Corpus Christi, Texas; Lake Charles, La.; and Lemont, Ill., and wholly or jointly owns 45 terminals, nine pipelines and three lubricants blending and packaging plants. CITGO transports and markets transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals and other industrial products and supplies a network of approximately 4,900 locally owned and operated branded retail outlets in 30 states and the District of Columbia.
