CITGO Petroleum Corp. has added its CITGO Pay features to its Club CITGO loyalty app, enabling customers to pay for fuel and access rewards in the same place.

Houston-based CITGO Petroleum Inc. supplies a network of more than 4,400 locally owned and independently operated branded retail outlets.

The branded fuel supplier is aiming to help its independent operators be more successful when they choose CITGO to be their fuel supplier, Joey Low, manager of loyalty and marketing programs and CSP Category Manager of the Year (CMOY) finalist, told CSP in March.

“While our Club CITGO loyalty program is built on fuel discounts, we know that helping retailers grow their inside sales will also benefit their gallon performance,” he said.

CITGO is also working on integrating delivery app technologies into the app, he said.

Another goal—double its loyalty members in 2025.

“Adding to our tech stack creates more value for our retailers so their willingness to feature the program is growing exponentially.” He said. “Our road map for adding to the tech stack is aggressive but we think the consumer will appreciate the program features available to them in the next 24 months.”

The former CITGO Pay app provided customers the option to activate the fuel dispenser before getting out of the car. Customers could also pay for fuel inside their car with receipts automatically emailed to the customer and stored in the app.

It also featured automatic rollback-at-the-pump savings, an everyday 2-cent reward on fuel purchases and the option for Club CITGO members to stack an additional 3 cents of savings onto their CITGO Pay savings.

The Club CITGO loyalty program and app now features all of these offers, plus fully funded, personalized retail offers to drive c-store traffic, faster payments with the use of biometrics to authorize purchases and enhanced security.

"Our goal is to continue enhancing the user experience for our customers, and this update directly addresses customer feedback regarding the inconvenience of managing two separate apps,” said Low. “The Club CITGO app now provides a more intuitive and integrated experience with enhanced security protocols."

The company deactivated CITGO Pay on April 1. After this date, mobile payments will be exclusively available through the updated Club CITGO app.
