Convenience Retailers Keep Giving

Rutter's, Stripes, Turkey Hill, Xtra Mart, IPCA continue community service efforts
YORK, Pa. -- Rutter's Children's Charities recently donated $10,000 to Hoffman Homes for Youth in Gettysburg, Pa. Hoffman Homes for Youth is a psychiatric residential treatment program for boys and girls ages 6 to 18. Rutter's donation will be used to purchase new furniture for the residences. Rutter's Children's Charities is the charitable arm of the York, Pa.-based Rutter's Cos., which include Rutter's Farm Stores, with 56 convenience stores in York, Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania; Rutter's Dairy, which serves Pennsylvania, Maryland, [image-nocss] Delaware and New Jersey; and M&G Realty, a real-estate development company.

In other charity news, Susser's Stripes c-stores gave thousands of people what they needed this 4th of July holiday. They handed out hundreds of beach umbrellas, beach towels and sand pails, along with 4,000 coupons for free bags of ice. Stripes also brought in "The Sandcastle Wizard." This July 4th extravaganza kicked off a summer of giving back for Stripes, reported KGBT-TV. Corpus Christi, Texas-based Susser Holdings Corp. is a third-generation family led business that operates more than 510 c-stores in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma under the Stripes and Town & Country banners. Restaurant service is available in more than 290 of its stores, primarily under the proprietary Laredo Taco Co. and Country Cookin' brands. The company also supplies branded motor fuel to approximately 370 independent dealers through its wholesale fuel division.

Turkey Hill Minit Markets is pitching in to help troops serving overseas. It began a month-long program to collect donations to send to the 6,000 Pennsylvania National Guard troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, said WFMZ-TV. People can either buy or drop off items at boxes located at Turkey Hills throughout the state. Operation Hometown Hello will continue through July. Lancaster, Pa.-based Turkey Hill Minit Markets has more than 230 c-stores throughout central Pennsylvania and the Scranton/Wilkes Barre, Pa., area.

Xtra Mart's 24th annual Jennifer Creed Charity Golf Classic on June 22 raised $60,000 for the Jennifer Creed Fund, which has been helping families cope with the difficulties associated with childhood cancer since 1974. North Grosvenordale, Conn.-based Xtra Mart has approximately 150 locations on the East Coast.

And the Indiana Petroleum Marketers & Convenience Store Association (IPCA) and 16 member companies representing 343 locations have banded together from June 26 through July 12 to raise funds for Riley Hospital for Children. This is the fourth annual fundraiser by members of the IPCA for Indiana's only comprehensive children's hospital. Customers at the stores put their names on a red Riley paper wagon and give $1 or more to Riley.

Companies included Ackerman Oil, Heritage Petroleum, Ricker Oil, Bellman Oil, Jackson Oil & Solvents, S&S Oil, Butterbaugh Oil, Jay Petroleum, Super Test, C.E Taylor Oil, McClure Oil, Village Pantry (with the Jeff Gordan Foundation), Gallahan Oil, McIntosh Energy, Good Oil and National Oil & Gas.
