GRANBY, Conn. -- To mark the opening of its newest convenience store in Granby, Conn., Cumberland Farms Inc. presented a $1,000 donation to support the Granby Little League. More than 600 young boys and girls are slated to participate in this year's season.

Meanwhile, Lily Haseotes Bentas, CEO and chairperson of Canton, Mass.-based Cumberland Farms, will be the commencement speaker at Salve Regina [image-nocss] University's graduation ceremonies May 21 in Newport, R.I., according to The Providence Journal. She will receive an honorary doctorate in business administration.
Bentas has worked for almost her entire adult life at the convenience-store and gasoline company founded by her parents, said the report. She helped lead its expansion in the 1970s and 1980s and its move into the petroleum business with the acquisition of hundreds of Gulf and Exxon stations in the Northeast.
Cumberland Farms, which has more than 1,100 outlets on the East Coast, was named the top woman-led business in Massachusetts by the Center for Women's Leadership at Babson College.
Separately, Rutter's Children's Charities, the charitable arm of the York, Pa.-based Rutter's companies, raised $68,000 with its 4th annual golf outing. The event, which was held May 1-2 at Regents' Glen Country Club in York, drew 230 players.
Rutter's has earmarked $25,000 for the March of Dimes, which plans to create a Parent Education and Support Center in the neonatal intensive care unit at York Hospital.
The retailer makes annual charitable contributions of approximately $200,000. Past beneficiaries have included the American Red Cross, United Cerebral Palsy, Make-A-Wish, Olivia's House and Easter Seals.
Family-owned and third-generation managed, the Rutter's companies comprise Rutter's Farm Stores, Rutter's Dairy and M&G Realty, a real-estate holding company.
