First Look at Next Week's Weather: May 4-10

Warm in the South, cooler to the North sets stage for Mother's Day weekend

BERWYN, Pa. -- The run-up week to Mother’s Day will bring warmth across much of the Southern tier of the United States, while the North and Canada will be cooler than last year, according to projections by Planalytics, the Berwyn, Pa.-based business weather intelligence firm.

For reference, next week last year, the U.S. was warmer than normal, with the most rainfall since 2009. Canada had its warmest beginning to May since 1999, with the least amount of precipitation since 2009.

Here's a look at what to expect this year.

  • Warmth will continue across the South. Major markets from the desert Southwest into Texas and throughout the Gulf Coast will enjoy warmer temperatures than the same time last year, aiding in demand for seasonal apparel and footwear leading up to Mother’s Day.
  • Cool conditions continue in the Northeast and Northwest. The Northeast, including New York City, Boston and Philadelphia will have temperatures slightly cooler than last year and normal. The Pacific Northwest into Central California is also expected to be cooler than last year and cooler than normal. Expect soft demand for apparel in the major population centers leading up to Mother’s Day.
  • Drier in the East and West. The East Coast looks to dry out compared to the heavy rainfall of the current week. The West continues to be denied much needed moisture, worsening drought conditions and promoting wildfires.
  • Wet central corridor. Heavy rainfall potential from the Northern to Central Plains could bring several days of rain to the region.
  • Stubborn cool trend continues in Canada. Spring warmth holds off across eastern Canadian cities and regions. The current snowpack facilitates cooler air to move across parts of the United States from the Great Lakes and across the Northeast.
