First U.S. EMV Chip Transaction Takes Place at Pump

N.C. retailer processes sale through Gilbarco POS and dispenser

BURLINGTON, N.C. -- A North Carolina retailer has processed the first EMV chip-card transaction at a fuel dispenser in the United States.

The milestone took place at a 49 Fuels site in Burlington, N.C., using a Gilbarco Passport point of sale (POS) at an Encore fuel dispenser on the First Data network. The Passport POS has been able to support in-store transactions that meet Europay MasterCard and Visa (EMV) payment standards since May 2016. With a software upgrade, it can handle full EMV pump transactions for all major card types, according to Gilbarco.

Kamlesh Patel, owner of 49 Fuels, said his pumps were already EMV-ready and only required the software upgrade to their Passport software to handle the transaction. His customers, he said, were also ready for the more secure payment technology.

“We’ve seen our customers rapidly become accustomed to paying with their chip cards inside the store on our Passport system, and they are quickly expecting to be able to use their chip card at the dispenser, as they know that it gives them additional security,” he said.

Gilbarco is expecting EMV payments on the forecourt to quickly expand at its installed base of FlexPay CRIND (card reader in dispenser) as software for payment networks is released throughout 2017, and as customers begin seeking out sites that offer chip-enabled transactions at the pump.

“Our customers are looking to enable EMV at the dispenser as soon as possible, to provide the security their customers expect of them, and to get the most of the forecourt EMV hardware investments they’ve already made,” said Mark Williams, vice president of marketing for Gilbarco Veeder-Root.

Greensboro, N.C.-based Gilbarco Veeder-Root offers a range of integrated solutions from the forecourt to the convenience store and head office. Major product lines include fuel dispensers, pump media, point-of-sale systems, payment systems, tank gauges, software development and integration, fleet management systems and nozzles.
