WASHINGTON — GetUpside, a rewards mobile app, has launched a convenience-store-specific product.
Using personalized offers delivered through the mobile app, GetUpside incentivizes new customers to visit gas stations on the platform and existing customers to visit more often. While customers are at the pump, the mobile app sends real-time notifications to bring them inside the c-store. Once they are inside, GetUpside’s machine learning platform recommends bundles to further increase basket sizes.
“GetUpside personalizes promotions to drive incremental, proven profit on gas, c-store items and overall c-store purchases. The company was founded four years ago, and we spent the first two years developing our machine learning algorithms to do the personalization work,” said Alex Kinnier, GetUpside co-founder and CEO, in an exclusive interview with CSP at the 2019 NACS Show in Atlanta.
The GetUpside platform combs through the anonymized card information merchants already have to allow them to personalize each customer’s experience, just as an online retailer would. Personalization allows merchants to maintain competitive public sign prices while interacting with each individual customer privately through the GetUpside mobile app.
By closely monitoring margins and moving with merchants, the platform does not generate personalized offers on extraordinarily low-margin products. This guarantees that every transaction through GetUpside is profitable for the merchant while allowing customers to benefit as well. Merchants on GetUpside see their results in real time, showing them the exact value that GetUpside is bringing to their business. The platform also integrates with existing branded merchant apps.
“We’ve put our money where our mouth is. If the user doesn’t come and buy more than they were before [using GetUpside], and get you earning more profit than you were before off that user, you don’t pay anything. No fee, nothing. Everything is on the incremental, and we have the results to back it up,” said Kinnier.
Washington, D.C.-based GetUpside is available at more than 14,000 locations in 41 states, including in some of the country’s largest metropolitan areas, such as Atlanta; New York; Washington, D.C., Baltimore; Charlotte, N.C.; Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa and Miami, Fla.; Austin and Houston, Texas; Indianapolis; Detroit; Minneapolis; and Chicago.
