Giant Eagle Ending Foodperks in Favor of Fuelperks

GetGo also running a Free Gas Giveaway

O'HARA, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle supermarket chain is scrapping its food discount program but is expanding a related Fuelperks gasoline discount program, said the Associated Press.

Foodperks offered 1% discounts on food for every 10 gallons of gasoline that customers purchased at the chain's GetGo convenience stores.

Giant Eagle spokesperson Dick Roberts told TribLive.com that Giant Eagle is canceling foodperks partly because customers didn't embrace it as much as they did fuelperks, the chain's most popular program.

In a letter mailed to customers, Giant Eagle chief executive officer Laura Karet said the company was canceling foodperks because customers found the program too complex, the report said.

Fuelperks gives customers 10 cents off per gallon of gasoline at GetGo stores for every $50 worth of food customers purchase. Under the expanded program, GetGo customers will get three cents off per gallon even if they do not have any Fuelperks discounts accumulated.

The program requires customers to use the Giant Eagle Advantage Card.

Giant Eagle started fuelperks in spring 2004 and foodperks in fall 2008, Roberts said. Discounts for both programs typically expire after 90 days, he said. The company says it has 4 million Advantage Card holders.

Giant Eagle GetGo is also running a Free Gas Giveaway from Feb. 6 through Feb. 27.

O'Hara, Pa.-based Giant Eagle has more than 220 supermarkets and 175 GetGo stores in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland.
