Hand Hygiene: Creating a Healthy Store

How can you encourage good hand hygiene at your convenience store?

AKRON, Ohio --It’s National Handwashing Week, a week dedicated to gaining awareness for and educating about the important role handwashing plays in helping to keep us healthy. This week also serves as a strong reminder of the overall impact proper hand hygiene, which includes handwashing with soap and water and hand sanitizing with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, has on reducing the spread of illness-causing germs, especially since we are in the middle of winter-germ season.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other leading health organizations, proper hand hygiene is one of the most important preventive measures you can take to reduce your risk of illness and infection. So, how can you encourage good hand hygiene at your convenience store?

One of the ways to accomplish this—and to stand out among your competition at the same time—is by making sure you are offering the right hand hygiene products at the right locations throughout your store. Some of the germiest hotspots at a c-store include:

  • Restroom door latch/handle
  • Store entrance door/handle
  • Gas pump handle
  • Gas pump keypad
  • Squeegee handle
  • Fridge handle

For example, having an alcohol-based hand sanitizer at the gas pump is one way to visibly demonstrate to your customers you care about their health and well-being not only during the winter months, but all year long, since you are providing hand sanitizer at two of the germiest places in a c-store—the gas pump handle and the gas pump keypad. In addition, customized signage allows you to get credit for providing your customers with PURELL Advanced Sanitizer.

C-stores can also boost store cleanliness by providing an alcohol-based hand sanitizer at other key locations throughout your store. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer, such as PURELL Advanced Hand Sanitizer, and a system such as the PURELL ES Everywhere System, are designed to fit in small spots with ideal placement at food service areas and beverage stations to help give customers confidence to buy food at your store and to help cut down restroom traffic.

Tis’ the season for people to possibly be ill. Make sure your customers stay healthy as they travel this holiday season by offering the right hand hygiene products at the right locations throughout your store.
