Meijer to Deliver in the Midwest

Signs deal with online shipping service

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Meijer Inc. is hitching a ride on the app-based grocery-delivery bandwagon.

The big-box grocer has partnered with Shipt, an online delivery service, to offer grocery delivery to customers with a Shipt membership in Grand Rapids, Mich., by March 29.

Meijer then plans to expand the service to Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Ind., in April before expanding to the rest of the grocer’s markets “in the coming months.”

The announcement comes after what the grocer refers to as a “highly successful launch” of grocery delivery—also in partnership with Shipt—in Detroit last fall. Meijer said that Shipt members in the Detroit area have placed more than 65,000 orders since September 2016.

"The way our customers shop continues to evolve," said Meijer Chairman Hank Meijer. "We believe the high-touch service that Shipt offers, coupled with what our customers love about shopping at Meijer, creates a new type of shopping experience."

The Shipt app will make 55,000 of Meijer’s items available to members. These include groceries, fresh produce and everyday essentials such as baby and health and beauty products. Deliveries will be available through Shipt at most Meijer locations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, excluding certain holidays. Shipt members pay $99 a year to receive unlimited free grocery deliveries on all orders over $35.

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer operates more than 230 supercenters and grocery stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. The chain is privately owned and family-operated.

Birmingham, Ala.-based Shipt delivers from grocery stores in 35 cities across the country through its mobile app and team of shoppers.
