SAN FRANCISCO — Uber Technologies Inc. is partnering with National Retail Solutions (NRS), operator of a point-of-sale (POS) platform for independent convenience stores, bodegas, tiendas and other neighborhood retailers. The partnership will facilitate the delivery of purchases from participating NRS stores.

Newark, N.J.-based NRS's nationwide network of participating independent retailers will be able to offer same-day delivery to their customers by using Uber Direct, which allows businesses to own the customer experience end-to-end and handle on-demand delivery orders.

“Since its inception, Uber has striven to make inroads providing accessibility and opportunity to underserved markets,” said Jason McHale, direct managing partner at Uber. “Our partnership with NRS will give small, local bodegas and grocery stores an opportunity to expand their reach through delivery and make more money, which is something we all should be excited about.”

NRS’s POS network for independent retailers in the United States comprises more than 20,000 active POS terminals operating in more than 17,000 stores. It will provide deliveries at no cost to the NRS retailer when the purchases are made through the BR Club app, NRS’s loyalty program.

“NRS was built specifically to empower independent retailers in urban and underserved neighborhoods and communities all across America,” said Elie Katz, president and CEO of NRS. “The NRS POS platform supports our retailers nationwide, providing them with powerful transaction processing and store management tools, security features, payment processing and digital marketing services that enable them to compete more effectively.”

Established in 2010, San Francisco-based Uber was created as a ride-sharing service. More than 25 billion trips later, it has expanded to transport food and goods, as well as ride-share passengers.

Newark, N.J.-based NRS, a subsidiary of IDT, offers a POS platform for independent c-stores, gas stations, liquor and tobacco stores nationwide. The NRS platform provides hardware with merchant software to help retailers compete, organize their business, attract customers and increase revenue. The POS includes a customer loyalty discount program, integration with NRS Pay and other credit card processing, and more. With ads on customer-facing screens, both in and out of transaction, manufacturers and advertisers can leverage the NRS platform to reach a broad, multicultural, urban consumer demographic. NRS' credit-card processing division, NRS Pay, offers card processing services that can be integrated with the POS system or used independently, in any industry.
