Philip Morris International’s U.S. Corporate Services unit said it will close its Richmond office in April, cutting 135 jobs from that site.
The company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice with Virginia Works on Jan. 28 informing the state that employees will be laid off starting April 17. The office is located at 1021 E. Cary St., which is the U.S. headquarters of Stockholm-based Swedish Match.
“Although the job losses at this employment site will be permanent, a large majority of impacted employees will be offered equivalent positions in other states," Thomas G. Hayes, president of Swedish Match North America, a subsidiary of PMI, said in the letter.
PMI bought Zyn maker Swedish Match North America in 2022. In January, PMI presented evidence Thursday to the Food and Drug Administration recommending authorizing Zyn nicotine pouch products as a modified risk tobacco product.
CSP reached out to PMI for comment regarding the closing but did not receive a reply by press time.
