Xtra Mart is the c-store brand of Drake Petroleum Co., which is a subsidiary of Warren Equities. Although some Xtra Marts are near highways or otherwise cater to “transient” customers, most are located in close-knit rural communities where each store serves as a sort of town center. Drake Petroleum’s wholesale division delivers a variety of branded motor fuels (CITGO, Exxon, Mobil, Shell, Sunoco) to Xtra Mart stores, as well as to about 300 dealers. Xtra Mart’s stores fly those flags in addition to a proprietary Xtra Fuels banner.

Slow but steady growth is on the horizon for Xtra Mart. The company opened two new stores in 2013, with Xtra Café Coffee and Dunkin’ Donuts in some of the stores. In business since 1950, officials say they have stores in different stages of development. Where they expand will be determined by the opportunities that arise within its current operating geography. The chain also has remodeled several stores each of the past few years.

Store sizes differ, though the average Xtra Mart measures 2,500 square feet. Most stores have eight gas pumps, though some stores on larger lots have as many as 12 or 14. The company has not been shy about adding new services such as car washes or prepared foods. Most stores in the Xtra Mart network have a proprietary Deli Joe’s foodservice offering, while approximately 10 stores have a car wash.
