K-VA-T Food Stores Convenience Division

K-VA-T Food Stores Inc. is a privately held, family-owned company operating 141 retail outlets spanning five states: Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. Based in Abingdon, Virginia, the chain includes Food City locations (with pharmacies and fuel centers), Fresh n' Low/Cooke's locations, Super Dollar Food Center limited assortment stores, Wine & Spirits stores and Curt's Ace Hardware Stores.

The company's growth strategy is a mix of acquisition and new-builds, said Mickey Blazer, executive vice president of pharmacy and fuel services. Last year, the chain moved into Birmingham, Alabama, with a three-store acquisition, and it plans to continue to grow the Alabama market, he said.

In addition to its convenience chain, the company runs 120 pharmacies, Blazer said.
