Former president and 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump said on his social media platform on Friday that he would “save Vaping again!”

Trump's Social Media Vaping Promise Marks Policy Shift

“I saved flavored vaping in 2019, and it greatly helped people get off smoking. I raised the age to 21, keeping it away from the ‘kids.’ Kamala and Joe want everything banned, killing small businesses all over the country. I’ll save vaping again!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

FDA Approves First Menthol E-Cigarettes in June 2024

Trump’s latest announcement is a pivot from his position on vape products during his presidency. In 2019, Trump called vaping a “problem,” with his administration saying it would go after all flavored vapes. In 2020, Trump revised his all flavored vape action with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) barring most flavors, including fruit and mint, from unauthorized cartridge-based e-cigarettes until companies go through the premarket tobacco application (PMTA) process.

Age Limit Raised to 21 During Trump Presidency

During his presidency, Trump signed legislation amending the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, and raised the federal minimum age for sale of tobacco products, including vaping devices from 18 to 21 years.

In June, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued marketing granted orders to Njoy LLC for four menthol-flavored e-cigarette products: Njoy Ace Pod Menthol 2.4%, Njoy Ace Pod Menthol 5%, Njoy Daily Menthol 4.5% and Njoy Daily Extra Menthol 6%. The announcement marks the first non-tobacco flavored e-cigarette products to be authorized by the FDA.

The move allows the products to be legally sold in the United States; however, it does not mean the products are safe or FDA approved, the agency said.
