CHICAGO — In recent months, CSP has been talking with retailers about their plans for products infused with cannabidiol (CBD). Those selling the items have shared the following tips.
One of the fundamental steps in a strong program is developing a thorough vetting process with suppliers so the retailer has a high degree of comfort with products coming into the store. As with any product that has the potential for misuse, retailers should be aware and prepared for any liability concerns over CBD that should arise.
The rules surrounding CBD products may differ from state to state, so retailers must develop strong internal processes to first understand what the current laws are and then stay on top of new developments.
Make sure store staff is knowledgeable and comfortable with the products. They should be able to answer questions if people inquire.
To ensure success, employees may need to actively engage consumers to see if they have questions and to follow up with as much information as possible.
If possible, assess the neighboring communities for any potential backlash from the sale of CBD products, because confusion still exists between CBD products and those with tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC (the psychoactive element in marijuana). Industrial hemp, the legal source for CBD products, must have a THC content of 0.3% or less.
